Add New: 'Potential Duplicate Warning' Message Appears - What do I Do?

As the database grows bigger and bigger, there is a good chance that a puzzle you may wish to add has already been added by another user. Once a puzzle has been entered, there is no need to enter it again; in fact, it is preferred that there should be only 1 record of each unique puzzle.


What constitutes a duplicate puzzle record?

A certain puzzle image may be manufactured by different brands, in differing sizes and versions. Each brand/size/version is unique, and, therefore, should have its own identifying record.


However, if you are entering a puzzle that matches certain criteria that deem it to be the same as a puzzle that has already been entered, this will be flagged, and you will be alerted that you are trying to enter a potential duplicate puzzle.


How does the app check for duplicates?

There are 3 checks in place to look for matching information:


  • Barcode match
  • Brand + Manufacturer ID + # of pieces match
  • Brand + Puzzle Title match

Each of the above checks can generate a notification, at which stage you can press the 'Compare with existing puzzle button', which will help determine if you want to merge your information with the existing record, or continue creating a new record


If your puzzle is indeed a new puzzle, and this does often happen, as many brands did not handle the assignment of barcodes, etc., cautiously, then write a note to the admin in the field underneath the button, and continue adding your record. The admin will review and approve your decision.

When hitting the 'Compare with existing puzzle' button, one of 2 things may happen.


If your entry is compared as a duplicate to multiple puzzles in IPDb, your browser will be opened and sent to IPDb, where all potential duplicates are shown. Please use the browser to determine if it is a duplicate or not... If it is, then add your information and images to the existing entry. To see how to see: here.


If your entry only compares to one record, you are in luck, and you will see the merge dialogue, which will help you to decide.

The merge dialogue will show the existing record in the left column and your entry in the right column, field by field. 


  • If your information is identical to the existing record, it will be shown in blue
  • If your information is new, it will be shown in green 
  • If your information is not equal to the existing record, it will be shown in red

The dialogue can merge your data into the existing record by clicking/tapping OK. This means that your images are added to the existing record, and the new (green) information. Any information marked red will be lost in the case of a merge.


These are the same options basically as you have if, instead of merging, you choose to edit the existing record.


Your record never appeared on IPDb after submitting it. What to do?


  1. Go to the Help Centre (? icon) 
  2. Submit a ticket with details of the puzzle/duplicate record that needs to be removed


The admin team will look at the entry and advise you of the next steps.
