Adding and Uploading Images

New method to improve overall image quality

Last Update 2 months ago

We've made a small but significant change to the way images are imported /added in IPDb.

Note - if adding images to an EXISTING record:

  • Find the puzzle record, and tap on it to see the details screen
  • To Edit the record:
    • Windows: tap the pencil icon at the top of the screen
    • Mobile Device: tap the 4-square icon at the top of the screen, the select Edit Puzzle

------------------------------------------------------

The process of adding images still begins from the Add/Edit screen; just click/tap the image-plus button at the bottom.

You'll still be taken to the familiar image upload dialogue.

However, you'll notice the interface now has fewer buttons. You can still begin uploading by selecting a file or using your camera.

The key change comes after the image is chosen or a photo is taken. Instead of uploading immediately, you'll now be taken to a rotate and crop dialogue that looks like this:

Unlike standard cropping tools, this interface asks you to position all four corners individually.

PC / Computer:
  • Each corner has a draggable handle; use your mouse to place them precisely
    • Position each of the 4 handles roughly in place, either by dragging them with your mouse, or by pressing and holding both SHIFT and CTRL keys and clicking in the corner pointed out at the bottom of the screen.
    • Press TAB (arrow with line icon or on your keyboard) to move focus to the first corner. Adjust its position either with the mouse or by use of the arrow keys on your keyboard.
    • Press TAB again to move to the next, and so on, until all 4 corners have pixel-perfect placement.

  • To zoom in/out, use your mouse wheel

  • If you prefer traditional square cropping, press and hold SHIFT key while dragging the handles with your mouse

Mobile Device:

  • Tap a handle, then drag from a slight distance to avoid your finger blocking the precise placement. Proceed to do this for all 4 handles if required
    • Press on the TAB icon (arrow with line icon) to see a close-up of a corner in even more detail to adjust its position, if required
    • Press TAB again to move to the next, and so on, allowing pixel-perfect placement using the keyboard

  • To zoom in/out, pinch the image for greater accuracy

Additional Controls:

  • In the lower-left corner, you'll find rotation buttons and a toggle to switch the handle colour between black and white; helpful for visibility against different images

  • Once you're happy with your crop, click/tap OK to proceed

Behind the scenes, the image will be straightened and cropped to match precisely the area defined by the four handles; you’ll see the final result shortly after.

This will ensure your image appears in the highest possible quality on IPDb, as it will fill the entire image upload space. That way, every pixel is dedicated to puzzle goodness; no distracting backgrounds, just 100% pure joy. You can see an example at the bottom of this page.

That said, cropping is optional. If your image doesn’t need adjusting, just click/tap OK to skip.

After cropping, IPDb will ask you to choose a category for your image.

The current categories to choose from are:

  • [puzzle pieces icon]: The completed puzzle
  • [box icon]: The front of the Box
  • [poster icon]: The Poster
  • [camera+ icon]: All other images, such as the side of the box, partially completed puzzle, etc
  • [square with lock]: Completed Mystery puzzle, which must be blurred to other users

If you're unsure which category suits a particular image, click/tap the X in the top-left corner; we’ll take care of it.

To select a category, click/tap the appropriate button. You’ll then be returned to the upload screen.

We hope you’ll enjoy using the new image import wizard; it’s designed to help all of us get cleaner, sharper uploads with just a few simple steps.

And here’s how our sample image turned out… not too shabby, right?
