Backup

Keeping it safe...

With IPDb, you can make a backup of your collection and save it on your device for safekeeping. IPDb naturally makes daily backups of our entire collection of puzzles, but in addition, we offer our users the option to keep a local copy on their own device.

To make a backup, open the folder named 'Approved', which holds all the puzzles you have submitted to IPDb, then hit the backup icon from the menu.

NOTE: Backup does use quite a bit of data, so it may not be suitable for users with mobile phones with small data allowances.

The backup may take some time, depending on the size of your collection, but eventually, a file called 'backup.zip' will be downloaded to your download folder.

This file can be kept somewhere, perhaps on your 'G' Drive, Dropbox or some other place, that is permanent.

Later, if you need to look into the backup, the first thing to do is to extract the content of the file. This is done in different ways depending on your computer. Try searching the internet for: 'How to unzip a file' - for instructions.

On a Windows PC, it is done by right-clicking the file and selecting 'Extract All' from the pop-up menu.

The next thing to do is to select where to save the content of the file.

If you keep the tick in the 'Show extracted...' checkbox, the folder you have chosen will be opened once you click 'Extract'.

This is your backup from IPDb, and you can now open the file 'index.html' by double-clicking it, which will open your backup in your favourite browser.

This is a list of all your puzzles. If you click on one of the 'thumbnails', it will show you the puzzle information.

If you click/tap one of the images, you will see the image in full size.

You can create a copy of the image by right-clicking it and then, select 'save image as...'.

BACKUP FREQUENCY
How often you make a backup naturally depends on how quickly your collection grows. If your collection does not change very often, there is no need to do a new backup.

Members are allowed 1 backup per month, and other users are allowed 1 backup per year. The reason behind this distinction is that the backup operation is very costly to perform, as it requires many online resources.
